Interesting Asian palm civet Facts:
Asian palm civet can reach 21 inches in length (not including the tail that is 19 inches long) and 3 to 10 pounds of weight.
Asian palm civet is covered with dark grey, coarse fur. It has black markings on the feet, ears, muzzle and white markings on the face. Unlike other species of civet, Asian palm civet does not have rings on the tail.
Asian palm civet has big eyes, long, pointed muzzle, small ears, elongated, stocky body and long tail.
Asian palm civet is active during the night (nocturnal animal).
Asian palm civet is an omnivore. Its diet is based on rodents, lizards, snakes, frogs, eggs, insects, fruit (mango, coffee, rambutan...) and sap from the flowers of palm tree.
Kopi Luwak is a type of coffee made of coffee beans that passed through digestive system of Asian palm civet (extracted from its feces). With a price of 100 dollars per pound, Kopi Luwak is one of the most expensive types of coffee in the world.
Asian palm civet spends part of its life on the ground and other part on the trees. It uses anal glands to mark its territory.
Asian palm civet can climb on the trees and house gutters with ease thanks to sharp claws on the feet.
Asian palm civets release nauseating substance from the scent glands located under the tail when they feel threatened. Both males and females have these glands.
Predators of Asian palm civets are tigers, leopards, large snakes and crocodiles.
Asian palm civet is solitary creature.
Asian palm civets can mate all year round (most babies are born from October to December).
Pregnancy in females lasts few months and ends with 2 to 5 babies. Females can produce 2 litters per year.
Mother takes care of her offspring until they become ready for the independent life. Asian palm civets reach sexual maturity at the age of 11 to 12 months.
Asian palm civet can survive 20 years in the wild and 22 years in the captivity.
